Dear Studentenraad,

I am writing to propose a small but impactful change to the university’s current digital-only student card policy. While digital cards offer convenience for many, the lack of a physical alternative creates significant barriers for certain students.

The Proposal: Maintain digital student cards as the default, but allow students to “opt-in” for a physical PVC student card, potentially for a small administrative fee to cover production costs.

The Challenges with the Current System: As a non-smartphone user, I am currently required to carry a printed A4 proof of enrollment. This is not a functional solution for several reasons:

Durability & Practicality: Paper degrades quickly, and carrying an A4 sheet in a wallet is not feasible. When I brought this up to the student advice center, it was suggested that I laminate the A4 paper, but of course then it doesn’t fit in my wallet.

Verification Issues: Staff at university facilities (such as the Botanical Gardens) have questioned the validity of a printed document compared to a standardized card, leading to delays and embarrassment.

Broader Benefits for the Student Body: Beyond those without smartphones, many students I have spoken with support a physical option for the following reasons:

• Reliability: Digital cards are useless if a phone battery dies or if there is no cellular reception (common in some libraries or off-campus venues).

• Digital Wellbeing: Many students are actively trying to reduce smartphone dependency. Requiring a phone for basic campus access contradicts efforts to minimize distractions in learning environments like the library.

• Inclusivity & Choice: An opt-in system respects “digital sovereignty” and ensures that campus life remains accessible to all, regardless of their choice of technology.

This proposal does not conflict with the university’s goals of sustainability or innovation; it simply adds an inclusive “safety net” for those who need it.
